Leadership Contest Updates:
If you read our last newsletter, you are aware there are currently five candidates in the race to be the next federal NDP leader; Avi Lewis, Heather McPherson, Rob Ashton, Tanille Johnston, and Tony McQuail. If you’re interested in knowing some more information about them, please refer to our newsletter from October 10th, 2025: https://www.reclaimcanadasndp.ca/updates/newsletter/october-10-2025
These leadership candidates took to the stage as a collective for the first time on Wednesday, October 22, 2025, graciously hosted by The Canadian Labour Congress (CLC). The event was livestreamed on their youtube channel, and is available for rewatch here: https://share.google/QZckotNKuKkGSYPQH
Each candidate was given 10 minutes to introduce themselves to those attending as well as the
more than 1,500 attending on the livestreams across the country. They were asked a series of
questions about why they should be the next NDP leader, here is a brief review of what they stated:
Avi Lewis centered himself on ideas to solve the affordability crisis, including publicly owned grocery stores, and telecom companies moving to a private sector. Lewis acknowledged a state of “desperation when facism is rising,” and that the NDP must be moving forward ideas, not just words. Lewis stated that if the party spoke to members directly, and remained on track with their ideas, the NDP could reconnect with voters across the country.
Heather McPherson emphasized that the NDP already has proven solutions to the cost-of-living crisis and effective strategies for strengthening Electoral District Associations (EDAs). She argued that rebuilding the party requires a coalition of the entire NDP caucus—from riding associations to caucus members—to create an organizing base. In her speech, McPherson expressed pride in “fundamentally changing the conversation about the genocide in Gaza” and in tabling a bill for a national ADHD framework with her son.
Rob Ashton opened his remarks by pledging to restore the trust of working-class Canadians and to win NDP seats in ridings that have never before elected New Democrats. From day one, he said, his priority will be contacting Electoral District Associations (EDAs) nationwide to hear directly what members believe is wrong with the party. He sharply criticized both the Liberals and Conservatives for failing to support working families and for ignoring the rising cost of living.
Tanille Johnston stated she would eliminate party membership fees and make the NDP open to all, ensuring the party’s doors are wide open to everyone. As the first Indigenous candidate to run for federal NDP leadership, Johnston's speech rallied around inclusion and accessibility. She expressed that members of minority and equity groups need to see themselves in this party's leadership, and that all communities—especially remote First Nation communities would be ensured a ballot box come the next federal election.
Tony McQuail knows he is the underdog in the race. McQuail is running in a party coalition between the NDP and the Green Party in order to get more progressive MPs elected. McQuail states that with a cross party voter coalition, his NDP can get more people involved in politics. As a critic of the “corporate capitalist consumer society that serves the elites,” he states society needs to shift toward ecological sustainability.
Baxter, David. “NDP leadership contenders pitch their vision to party membership at first forum.” The Canadian Press, Oct. 22 2025.
