Reclaim remains firmly committed to maintaining strict neutrality in the ongoing NDP leadership election. We have not endorsed, and will not endorse, any candidate or slate. Our mission of revitalizing EDAs and empowering the grassroots of the party is best served by remaining independent of any particular campaign. Regardless of who wins in March, strong EDAs will be essential to rebuilding the NDP.
We value our mission and independence too much to tie ourselves to any one candidate, no matter how closely our values might align. That said, we are of course willing to work with any and all campaigns to advance our shared goals.
The recent involvement of several Reclaim organizers and spokespeople in the Tony McQuail and Tanille Johnston Fundraiser Telethon has understandably raised questions about our impartiality. We want to reiterate what was stated during the event: participation in the Telethon should not be interpreted as an endorsement of either candidate.
Our involvement reflected only our belief that the leadership race is strongest when as many people as possible can participate; a view shared by several prominent New Democrats and several if not all of the leadership candidates.
Our supporter, friend, and former NDP MP Matthew Green, as he stated during the telethon, shares this belief, and affirms that he has not endorsed any leadership candidate either.
To avoid any perception of impropriety, we are making the following changes and clarifications: effective immediately, Keith de Silvia-Legault and Ji Won Jung, who hold positions as senior staff for Tony McQuail and Tanille Johnston's NDP leadership campaigns, respectively, will be stepping down from their roles as co-spokespeople, and continue instead going forward as co-national organizers.
Additionally, we wish to clarify that any other roles Reclaim organizers may hold on leadership campaigns are undertaken strictly in a personal capacity. Reclaim and leadership campaign resources will never be co-mingled.
Thank you all for your engagement with our party's leadership process and for holding us accountable on our involvement. Please feel free to direct any questions or concerns by email at reclaim.ndp@gmail.com or by phone or text at 343-321-8288 within Canada.
In solidarity,
The Team at Reclaim Canada's NDP
